    • Calcium Fluoride (CaF2): For mid to long-wave IR, with excellent laser damage threshold.

    • Barium Fluoride (BaF2): For broad-band IR from mid to far-infrared, resistant to harsh environments.

    • Zinc Selenide (ZnSe): The primary material for Long Wave Infrared (LWIR, 8-14μm), offering exceptional transmission and low absorption loss.

  • Form: Fabricated as flat optical windows or simple lenses (planar-concave/convex).


2. Defining Physical & Optical Properties:

  • High Infrared Transmission: All three materials offer superior transparency in the critical LWIR atmospheric window, allowing thermal radiation to pass through with minimal loss.

  • Durability & Environmental Resistance: Engineered to be chemically resistant and withstand harsh outdoor conditions, including moisture and abrasion. ZnSe often receives a durable diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating for protection.

  • Low Dispersion & Aberration: Provide clear, undistorted thermal imaging by minimizing optical errors in the IR spectrum.

  • Thermal Stability: Maintain optical performance across a wide operational temperature range.

  • Protective Entrance Window: Serves as the first external element, physically sealing and protecting sensitive infrared camera or night vision detector arrays from dust, moisture, and physical damage.
